Five Things Vlog #4

My husband and I bought a home together a few years back. The couple that lived here before us were retiring to a cabin in the woods. They had been trapping and neutering feral cats, then releasing them and providing food for the colony. They trapped all the cats they were feeding, and took them to their new home, where they had build a “cattery” for the cats. They caught all but two of the colony, and the woman requested that we continue feeding the two wizened older cats too smart to be caught.

We agreed, though one of the cats died several months after we moved into the house. There is one left, and we’ve had to work to gain her trust. We call her “White Kitty” and you’ll meet her when you watch this Thing:

I am slowly taming a once-feral cat

That could be commendable work. I hope when you get it tamed you’ll take it indoors.

I wish I could. She is pretty nice as far as cats go. But I already have three exclusively indoor cats, also pulled off the streets, and that is the limit my allergies can take. This particular white cat is deaf, or nearly so. I have observed her remaining completely oblivious to pigeons foraging three feet away from her. I have provided her some comfy spots to curl up in the sun, and she rarely leaves my back yard during the day, although I don’t know what she does at night. I do know that if I go out and rattle her food bowl, she turns up within twenty seconds. From the former owner of my home, I know this is a pretty old cat, thirteen or fourteen years. I’d say she’s nearing the end of life – she is not particularly energetic. But your point is well taken. I do encourage fellow cat owners to keep their cats indoors at all times. The city isn’t safe for them, and the local birds are not safe from them.
