Camouflage

In March 2007 I made a video about Table Mesa Road. I was looking through the clips that ended up on the cutting room floor and found this one. The star of this video is just about 2 inches long. When you can see him.

I’m not sure what he is. I think he’s a hybrid toad, maybe part red-spotted toad and Woodhouse’s toad or maybe Arizona toad since he did have a tendency to hop rather than “walk.” Not really sure. While trying to identify him, I found a really nice description of the lives of toads in Arizona’s riparian areas.

Toads were things I saw a lot of as a boy. But more often than not it was frogs. The story goes that I kissed a frog once and things were never quite the same after that.

Of course, frogs and toads will try anything to get a vlogger’s attention. You’ve been warned.

I was looking really close at my screen trying to see the damn thing then thought, “She better not do one of those loud noise scary things. I’ll kill her if she does that”

I dont know how you saw that toad out there. You have amazing eyes! Took me forever to see it on the screen much less trying to find it in a desert.

Robert! I LOVE Michigan J. Frog! Also, Burl Ives’ song “Froggie Went a-Courtin’” of course. But I can’t kiss this toad. He’d ooze poison if I did.

David you crack me up! I hate those loud noise things – I’d kill myself if I did that. If the little guy had not hopped as I walked by, I would never, ever have known he was there. As it was, I was completely amazed. And now, I’m busted. That last few moments where I kind of pause on him, then drift up, then come back? Before the drift up, I couldn’t see him and had no idea he was even in my shot. I had simply pointed the camera at where I thought I saw him land, and got lucky. Ha ha!
