Broom Game

A couple of years ago, I saw The Broom Game, and I’ve wanted to try it ever since the first viewing. This July 4, I convinced my mom to play it with me. Watch and have a laugh with us.

We’re doing this in the park in the center of Clarkdale, Arizona. The funny thing – after we finished a curious woman approached us. She turned out to be an anthropologist who specialized in human recreation. She really wanted to know what we were doing! After we told her, she explained that children in nearly every culture invent games to alter their state of consciousness. She just didn’t expect to find adults doing it in her local park.

    Hahahaha…

Fetch me my broom. It’s time to play. :)

  2. Verdi says:

I can’t handle spinning almost at all – the video was making me dizzy. But listening to you guys laugh was great.

  3. Cheryl Colan says:

But, Verdi, we’ve seen you spin with a yellow ball!

If spinning’s not your thing, it’s not the game for you, but we sure had fun. Falling is the best part. We had nice soft grass to catch us.

  4. Linda Hicks says:

Crazy ladies! You be nice to your Mom. She’s such a good sport and so are you.

  5. Valdez says:

I see people like that at the park all of the time, not with brooms though.

Have you seen the baseball bat version they do as in between inning entertainment at games? You put one end of the bat on the ground, lean over an put your forehead on the handle end, then spin around the bat. Then you try to beat the other person to a finish line.

My brother and I used to spin under the ceiling fan in our living room to trip out.

  6. Cheryl Colan says:

I had forgotten about the baseball bat version until you mentioned it, Aaron. I like your brothers and your version better – I bet you experimented with spinning both directions (with the ceiling fan, opposing the ceiling fan).

  7. BJ says:

Bummer….can’t open it…too many firewalls here at work, I suppose.

  8. Rupert says:

This is the most awesome thing, ever.
Amy is going to freak out when I show her this.
Then she’s never ever going to want to stop playing.
We’re dizziness and falling over addicts. Lila is only 1, but already spinning is one of her favourite things.
And I *love* that there was an anthropologist who specialized in human recreation watching you.
Good for you for going to the middle of your park and doing it.

  9. This is so fun! Though I had trouble watching when it was in broom-0-vision….made me dizzy :-) Did you mount the camera on the broom to get that?

  10. Cheryl Colan says:

Ha, Ru, you have to make video of Amy playing, promise! Lauren – I have a monopod, so I just used it instead of the broom when I had a go. In retrospect, it was not the most interesting shot, but at the time it seemed like a good idea. I was thinking about Valdez and his rake.

  11. Rupert says:

Ah, the famous Valdez rake. He just shot a new one today, HD cam on lawnmower:

I liked your broomcam a lot. Weird how it made us dizzy.

  12. Linda says:

LOL! This is so funny! Loved it!
Btw, you have such a great video blog.

  13. heath says:

That was fun Cheryl, far to often we stop doing things like this as adults….or we only do it when were drunk….

I love the sound of laughter….very fun

  14. Donna (MOM) says:

This was fun, even though I laid down more than I stood up! Looks to me like I got my legs tangled a lot.

Anyway, it was a hoot! Hope we will always have this kind of fun, Cheryl!
