Posted: hummingcrow.com and in the Videoblogging group
Mailed: info@videoblogging.info

I hereby formally and publicly request that links to my Lumiere videos be removed from videoblogging.info/lumiere/, where they are listed as videos by hummingcrow.

I do so for the following reasons:

I disagree with the Lumiere Manifesto published by Andreas Haugstrup Pedersen & Brittany Shoot in August 2007 and do not wish to have my work associated with it by inclusion at videoblogging.info/lumiere/. While I acknowledge that I could force the exclusion of my work by deleting it entirely, I prefer to leave the work published as part of my body of work. I simply wish to disassociate my work from the videoblogging.info web site. I do not have any interest in engaging in a conversation or debate about the manifesto.

While I originally felt no need to request removal of work created prior to the manifesto’s publication, I now wish to assist in removing any semblance of speculation from the ongoing discussion, as represented in this message and its quoted posts, over whether videos would be removed from videoblogging.info/lumiere/ if requested.

Sincerely,

Cheryl Colan

Update: January 17, 2008

I created five Lumiere videos between June 27 – July 22, 2007, in response to encouragement from fellow vlogger Andreas Haugstrup Pedersen. It was fun. My videos, along with those of many others, were linked to from videoblogging.info.

In August 2007, Andreas Haugstrup Pedersen and Brittany Shoot published the Lumiere Manifesto. I wish to publicly state that I disagree with most of the manifesto content, and that my Lumiere videos should not be construed as an endorsement of the manifesto. I am not interested in engaging in a conversation about the manifesto’s relative merits, or what I view as problematic. I simply wish to disassociate my work from it.

Original Post

I’ve been running a few errands in preparation for BlogHer. One of them included getting my car washed. Lest you think I’m auto-fussy, check out what the dust storm did to my car a couple nights ago. Ugh.

Anyway, I recognized the opportunity for another Lumiere video. Please enjoy your own audio soundtrack while playing the video back.

More video from the rare, rainy day at my mom’s house in Clarkdale, AZ. We had been watching rain come down about 15 miles away (as the crow flies, of course) when the lightning started. I thought, “I wonder if I could get that in a Lumiere video?” I asked and I received.

Original Post

This is a 60-second excerpt of an 11-minute Independence Day Parade, July 4, 2007 in the little town of Clarkdale, smack dab in the rural-ish Verde Valley in central Arizona. Welcome to SmallTown, USA.

I wish I could show the entire parade! It starts with the Color Guard of WW2 and other veterans, and then come the children. Oh! The children! They are so cute, haphazardly throwing candy at the spectators, then greedily picking half of it back up for themselves. Then there are the cyclists, the dogs, the homemade floats set atop Radio Flyer wagons. And then the ancient fire engines! Somewhere in there are the town dignitaries, but everyone knows it’s not about them. What you do at the parade is, you wave at the kids and shout how great they’re doing even if they can’t march along in a straight line. It’s all about the kids.

Remember, Lumiere videos have no audio, so play your own patriotic tune as a backdrop. I hope this still counts as a Lumiere, despite the fact that a four-year old jostled the camera while lunging for a piece of bubble gum thrown from the parade ranks.

Oh, and warning – the AppleTV version is now huge (960×540 pixels) with the recent update of QuickTime and the H.264 codec.

There is something poetic, sad, and true about this struggle. Aren’t there days when you feel like this? And in a sense, isn’t this all our lives? We struggle to keep righting ourselves, until the end. This bug is my hero.

For the record, I did not put the bug in the jar. My husband did. I think my cat had been playing with it, and then my husband, very cat-like at times, chose to continue the game in an even more cruel way. I went out to check the laundry and saw this, and the metaphoric quality punched me in the gut. Had to show you.

Thus I shot my first Lumiere video, though I’m not certain I met the rule about fixed camera. I had to hold it in my hand as there was no good place for a tripod or for setting it down. See more Lumiere videos and learn the rules at videoblogging.info/lumiere.
